New Delhi
Prime Minister Narendra Modi -led BJP government has got a big political lead from the upper house of Parliament from Rajya Sabha. Before the Vice Presidential elections to be held on 9 September, the BJP has crossed the 100 mark in the Rajya Sabha again, which is being considered very important for the party.
BJP’s strength has now reached 102 MPs, which is the first time since April 2022. This lead is from the three nominated members joining the BJP- top lawyer Ujjwal Nikam, former Foreign Secretary Harshvardhan Shringla and Kerala social worker C Sadanandan Master…
BJP crosses 100 figures for the second time
The current strength of the Rajya Sabha is of 240 MPs, including 12 nominated members and 5 seats are vacant. In such a situation, the BJP alone has 102 MPs, while the total number of NDA alliance has increased to 134, which is more than the 121 figure required for the majority.
After the results of the elections held for 13 Rajya Sabha seats on 31 March, 2022, the BJP became the second party with more than 100 MPs in the upper house of Parliament in Indian history. Then the number of BJP had increased from 97 to 101. The Congress had this pride between 1988 and 1990.
Who are these three new faces?
Ujjwal Nikam: Special Public Prosecutors who punished Ajmal Kasab in 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks. Padma Shri honored in 2016. In the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, he came on BJP ticket, although lost.
Harshvardhan Shringla: He was the Foreign Secretary of India from 2020 to 2022. He has also been the Chief Coordinator of G20 Summit 2023. Has worked as an ambassador of India in America and Bangladesh.
C Sadanandan Master: Known social worker and teacher of Kerala. In 1994, his legs were cut off in violence, the allegations were leveled against the CPM workers. In 2016, the assembly elections were also contested on a BJP ticket.
Another nominated member – Meena Menon
Political historian Dr. Meenakshi Jain, who was nominated with these three, is also considered close to BJP’s views. She has been a member of the Historical Research Council of India (ICHR) and was also awarded the Padma Shri in 2020.
What does it mean?
The BJP, along with 102 MPs in the Rajya Sabha, now holds a strong hold in both houses of Parliament. Its direct impact will be seen in the pace in the passage of laws, ease of implementation of policies and political dominance.
After 2024, in PM Modi’s third innings, this parliamentary strength opens the way for him to implement ‘policy reforms’ rapidly.
This good news from the Rajya Sabha is not only an increase in the count of MPs for the Modi government, but is also a political sign- the government is ready to run more gallops now!
