Chhattisgarh’s Fight Against Naxalism: Progress Report

Significant Progress Against Naxalism in Chhattisgarh

On Saturday, Deputy Chief Minister Vijay Sharma announced that approximately 80% of Naxalism has been eradicated in Chhattisgarh, with the remaining 20% confined to certain areas in the western and southern parts of the state. He expressed confidence that this threat would be completely eliminated within the designated timeframe.

The central government has committed to eradicating Naxalism from the country by March 2026. While addressing reporters, Sharma noted that Naxalism has been significantly reduced in Chhattisgarh, with only 20% still present in regions like Abujhmad and parts of Sukma and Bijapur districts.

Sharma emphasized that the residents of Bastar can now breathe freely without fear. He assured that conditions would soon improve to the point where individuals could enjoy a cup of tea by the banks of the Indravati River, which flows through the Bastar region. He reiterated the government’s belief that the natural resources of Bastar belong to its people, especially the youth.

The Deputy Chief Minister highlighted a strong sentiment among the youth of Bastar, who are eager to shape the future of their region. He expressed pride in their commitment to take care of Bastar, referencing the enthusiasm displayed during events like the Bastar Olympics and Bastar Pandum, where young participants demonstrated their dedication to democratic values.

Sharma announced that legal provisions aimed at strengthening panchayats and village councils would soon be implemented. In response to a question regarding Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s statement about the government’s efforts to find lasting solutions to major security challenges, including Naxalism, the North-East, and Jammu and Kashmir, Sharma noted that Shah had emphasized the need to eliminate separate cells for these issues within the Home Ministry, advocating for uniform progress across the country. He pointed out that positive outcomes are evident, with Jammu and Kashmir reaching a stable state, insurgency in the North-East nearly extinguished, and Naxalism on the verge of being eradicated.

Sharma mentioned that Prime Minister Modi had appealed for an end to violence from Naxalites before the last assembly elections. Under Modi’s leadership, with the support of Home Minister Shah and the guidance of Chief Minister Vishnu Dev Sai, Naxalism in Bastar is nearing its end. He warned that those who refuse to surrender and continue to wield weapons would face appropriate responses from security forces.
